MAGNET RARE EARTHS / DY

Dysprosium

An optional input for coercivity at higher temperatures.

Industrial context.

Dysprosium can improve resistance to demagnetisation in demanding NdFeB designs. Material addition and grain-boundary diffusion differ in how much heavy rare earth is required.

Questions for a supplier.

Ask the magnet maker how it achieves the required coercivity and which temperatures were tested. The target depends on duty cycle, geometry and manufacturing route.

Sources and scope

  • IEA · Rare Earth Elements8 April 2026

The IEA estimates China’s 2024 shares at 60% of magnet rare-earth mining, 91% of refining and 94% of sintered permanent magnet production. The first two cover Nd, Pr, Dy and Tb.

  • USGS · Mineral Commodity Summaries, rare earths chapter2026 edition

USGS estimates 2025 world mine production of all rare earths at a rounded 390,000 metric tonnes of rare-earth oxide equivalent.
